I recently photographed a city centre PR activation in Manchester for an agency-led VoucherCodes campaign, capturing the Stress-Less Piñata stunt in Exchange Square.
The campaign was built around a simple, visual idea: a smashable piggy bank piñata in a high-footfall location, giving members of the public the chance to take part and unlock a short “Deal Happy Hour” moment nearby.
For this type of live PR event, photography needs to do more than record the setup. The images need to show the idea clearly, capture genuine public interaction, include strong brand visibility and create a set of assets that can be used across PR, social media, internal reporting and post-campaign marketing.
Photographing a Live PR Activation in Manchester City Centre

The activation took place in Exchange Square, Manchester, a busy public space with strong footfall and a constant flow of people passing through.
For public-facing brand activations, the challenge is to capture a clear story quickly. There are often only a few key moments where the campaign, brand, public reaction and location all come together in one frame. My role is to stay alert to those moments while also building a wider gallery that gives the client and agency plenty of useful options.
For the VoucherCodes Stress-Less Piñata activation, I focused on capturing the full campaign environment, including the yellow branded set, the piggy bank piñata, the VoucherCodes messaging, people stopping to watch and members of the public interacting with the stunt.
Capturing the Campaign Idea Clearly

A strong PR activation gallery needs clear images that explain the campaign even without much context.
The VoucherCodes activation was visually bold, with a bright yellow branded set, oversized tag-style backdrop, piggy bank piñata and campaign messaging around saving money ahead of summer spending. These elements made the campaign instantly recognisable and gave the final gallery a strong visual identity.
I always aim to capture a mix of wide shots, mid-range storytelling images and close-up branded details, so the final gallery can be used flexibly by agencies, marketing teams and clients.
Public Engagement and Real Reactions

The strongest images from a PR stunt are often the ones where people are genuinely taking part.
For this campaign, the piñata gave members of the public a clear action to engage with, creating movement, expression and reaction. That meant there were opportunities to capture people swinging the bat, watching the piñata, reacting to the moment and gathering around the activation.
These images are especially valuable because they show the campaign working in real life. They help demonstrate public interest, footfall, participation and atmosphere, which are all important for campaign reporting and future marketing.

Branded Details for PR, Social and Reporting

Alongside the action, I captured the branded details that help tell the full campaign story.
For PR and marketing teams, detail images are often just as useful as the hero shots. They can be used in social carousels, campaign summaries, client reports, press material, internal presentations and follow-up content.
For this shoot, that included the VoucherCodes branding, the campaign props, the branded bat, the yellow set, the piñata and the discount-themed visual details that connected the live activation back to the wider campaign message.

Photography for Agencies and Brand Teams

When photographing work for agencies and brand teams, I know the final gallery needs to be practical, not just visually strong.
A successful gallery should give the team options. That usually means clean images of the setup, branded shots, public interaction, staff or ambassador images, action moments, detail photographs, wider atmosphere and images with enough space for cropping into different formats.
For this Manchester activation, the aim was to create a consistent and useful set of images that could support the campaign after the event, whether for PR coverage, social media, client reporting, case studies or future promotional work.
Working Quickly Around a Live Public Event

Live activations move quickly. The best moments are often unscripted, and the environment can change in seconds.
My approach is calm, unobtrusive and responsive. I work around the flow of the activation, keeping an eye on the brand, the people, the key moments and the wider scene. This helps me capture natural images without interrupting the experience for the public, staff or agency team.
For a PR stunt like this, that balance is important. The photography needs to feel energetic and engaging, while still being clean, professional and useful for the campaign.
Alongside PR activations, I also cover corporate event photography for conferences, panel talks, awards, networking events and business campaigns.

Manchester is an especially strong location for live events and public-facing brand activations, with busy city centre spaces, strong footfall and a growing number of agencies, brands and marketing teams producing creative campaigns.
Whether the brief is a PR stunt, product launch, corporate event, community campaign, awards night, exhibition or brand activation, I focus on creating natural, professional images that help the story of the event continue after the day itself.
I also cover London conferences, launches, brand events and agency-led campaigns through my corporate event photographer London service.
