I recently had the pleasure of photographing Birmingham Airport’s Race the Plane in support of Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, a high-energy fundraising event that brought together teams from across the region for a genuinely memorable challenge.
As a Birmingham event photographer, this was exactly the kind of assignment I enjoy most, fast-moving, people-focused, and full of atmosphere, effort and natural moments that told the story of the day. It was not simply about photographing people on bikes. It was about capturing the energy of the event as it unfolded, the teamwork behind each effort, the support around the room, and the wider purpose that made the day matter.

Birmingham Airport later reported that Race the Plane was its first event of this kind, with 14 teams racing a live departure to Cancun on static bikes and raising £80,000 so far for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity. From a photography point of view, that gave the event a brilliant mix of action, emotion, branding and real community spirit.
A high-energy charity event at Birmingham Airport
Events like this are a great reminder that strong event photography is about far more than documenting attendance. The best coverage needs to show what the day felt like, not just what happened on paper.
At Birmingham Airport, that meant photographing the bigger picture as well as the smaller moments, the riders pushing through their stages, the encouragement from team members and supporters, the branded environment, the smiles, the effort, and the atmosphere that built as the challenge went on. It was an event with real visual variety, which always helps create a stronger and more useful gallery afterwards.

Because the event was in support of Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, there was also a clear emotional thread running through the day. That wider purpose made the coverage feel more meaningful. It was not just about speed or competition, it was about people coming together to raise money for an important cause and enjoying the process together.
Photographing action, atmosphere and team participation
One of the most important parts of photographing a fundraising event like this is balancing action with storytelling.
The action itself matters, of course. You want strong moments of effort, determination and movement. But the wider story is just as important. Good event photography should also show how people interacted, how teams supported each other, and how the event was presented as a whole. That is often what makes the images more valuable after the day itself, whether they are used for social media, press coverage, internal communications or future fundraising promotion.

I also wanted to make sure the gallery felt well-rounded rather than repetitive. That meant mixing wider action images with closer moments, team interaction, charity branding and more relaxed documentary frames that gave the set some breathing space.

Just as importantly, the event had a real lift to it throughout the day, with music, encouragement and visible team spirit helping keep the energy high. Birmingham Airport’s own recap described it as fun-filled and packed with activities, which definitely came across in the room and made it a strong event to photograph.

Why strong fundraising event photography matters after the event
A successful event does not end when the final bike stage is over.
For charities, fundraising events often live on through post-event marketing, partnership updates, sponsor comms, website stories and future campaign promotion. For venues and corporate partners, the images can also support LinkedIn posts, internal reporting, newsletters and wider brand storytelling.
That is why I always try to photograph these events in a way that gives clients a practical, versatile image library, not just a quick recap of the day.

This event had a particularly strong mix of ingredients from a photography point of view, action, personality, branding, teamwork and a clear cause behind it all. That combination makes for much stronger storytelling than a more generic corporate event, and it also means the images can keep working long after the event has finished.
I also like including a few quieter frames in a set like this, especially when they help give context and place. They slow the sequence down slightly and make the post feel more rounded and editorial.
