I was commissioned as the corporate event photographer for Gymshark Day Zero at The Vox Conference Venue, located within Resorts World Birmingham.

The internal event brought Gymshark colleagues together for leadership presentations, conversations and shared experiences. From the opening moments, it was clear that this was not going to look or feel like a conventional corporate conference.

Attendees moved through a dramatically lit environment beneath an enormous Gymshark screen, while the scale and production of The Vox gave the event a distinctive visual identity.

The brief combined the formal programme with the human story unfolding around it. Alongside presentations from Gymshark’s leadership team, including founder and CEO Ben Francis, I was asked to capture employee reactions, candid conversations, personalised artwork and the wider atmosphere of the day.

My objective was to bring those different elements together in a collection that felt energetic, cohesive and unmistakably Gymshark.

More than a record of the running order

An internal event such as Day Zero has two stories.

The first is found in the scheduled programme: the speakers, presentations and messages being shared from the stage. The second develops naturally throughout the room as colleagues listen, react, reconnect and spend time together. Both were important to the brief.

I needed to move comfortably between the scale of the presentations and the quieter interactions happening around them. This allowed the finished collection to document what took place while also communicating what it felt like to attend.

Photographing Gymshark founder and CEO Ben Francis

One of the central moments was a presentation from Gymshark founder and CEO Ben Francis.

For me, the photographs needed to perform two different jobs. The wider compositions had to place Ben within the production and visual story surrounding him, while the tighter frames needed to concentrate on his expression, gestures and delivery.

The first photograph connects him with the Gymshark imagery displayed across the stage. The second removes most of the surrounding detail and creates a stronger standalone portrait of him speaking. Together, they give the client both context and personality from the same presentation.

Making The Vox part of the visual story

The venue itself became an important part of the photography.

The scale of The Vox, its large presentation screens and dramatic lighting helped establish the atmosphere of Day Zero. I stepped back at key moments to show the room, audience and production surrounding each speaker.

These wider compositions give viewers a sense of being present. They also provide valuable context for the tighter speaker portraits elsewhere in the gallery.

I looked for more creative viewpoints too, using silhouettes, light and movement to capture the character of the production rather than photographing every presentation from an identical position.

Finding the photographs between the presentations

Some of my favourite photographs from the day were not found on the running order.

They came from watching what was happening between the scheduled moments: colleagues laughing together, audience members responding to something on stage and spontaneous conversations developing around the venue.

I work quietly during these parts of an event, anticipating interactions without repeatedly stopping people or asking them to recreate something that has already happened. This helps people remain comfortable and allows the resulting photographs to feel natural.

These candid images give the gallery warmth. They also help Gymshark communicate the character of its team, rather than only showing what appeared on stage.

Making the Gymshark identity part of the story

A logo alone does not necessarily make a photograph feel connected to a brand.

Rather than collecting isolated photographs of branded elements, I looked for compositions where Gymshark’s identity became a natural part of the event story. Presentation screens, lighting, environmental details and personalised artwork all helped place the people firmly within the Gymshark setting.

This approach kept the collection visibly connected to the brand without allowing the branding to overwhelm the people and moments at the centre of the event.

The personalised artwork also introduced a different visual dimension to the gallery, showing another part of the Day Zero experience away from the main stage.

Creating an image library with a life beyond the event

When photographing a corporate event, I consider how the images might be used long after the room has emptied.

For Gymshark, I created a varied collection containing leadership presentations, audience reactions, candid employee interactions, branded details and wider scene-setting photographs.

I also photographed a mixture of horizontal and vertical compositions, including images with space that could accommodate text or graphic design. This gives the client more flexibility when using the photographs across internal communications, LinkedIn, recruitment content, company presentations and future event promotion.

The objective is not simply to deliver hundreds of individually strong photographs. It is to create a useful visual resource with enough variety to support different platforms, formats and messages.
