Model & Actor Portfolio Photographer Birmingham: Five Looks with Nancy Ediwal

A great portfolio doesn't just show someone at their best. It shows what they're capable of.
When actress and model Nancy Ediwal asked me to photograph her new professional portfolio, that was the brief in a sentence: a set of images an agent or casting director could scroll through and immediately see range. We went for five looks and five moods, all shot on location.

Why we shot on location
Real places give a portfolio a texture you can't fake: worn stone steps, heavy black doors, archways and city streets after dark. They also give an actor something to react to. Rather than performing in front of a backdrop, Nancy was placed in a scene, and that comes through in every frame.
Look one: Sharp tailoring

An oversized grey suit, crisp white shirt and skinny black tie, against black doors and stone steps. We shot this look two ways. Some frames are direct and commanding, staring straight down the lens. Others are quieter, with her gaze turned away, closer to a still from a film than a fashion shot. For an actor that contrast matters, because it shows she can hold attention without saying a word.
Look two: White shirt and cap

This look is softer and warmer, with a baker boy cap and an open white shirt. Tight framing and warm light keep everything on her expression.
Look three: Olive and yellow

A tailored olive waistcoat dress, lifted with flashes of yellow: petal earrings, a bangle and an umbrella framing her face. The styling is bold, but the intensity still comes from her.
Look four: Bold red

A fitted red dress on a modern street, with the city lights blurring behind her. It's the most fashion-led look of the shoot: confident, poised and editorial.
Look five: After dark

We finished as the light faded, with a flowing printed dress against the glow of the city. It's moody and cinematic, the natural closing note for an acting portfolio.
What makes a strong actor and model portfolio?
Range over repetition. Every image should show something new, whether that's a different mood, outfit or setting.
Eye contact and in-between moments. Agents want to see you connect with the lens. Casting directors want to see a character.
Quality over quantity. A tight edit of strong images beats fifty similar ones.
Settings that tell a story. A location adds atmosphere and context that a plain backdrop can't.
